Can my student take Physical Fitness or Health in a shorter amount of time or start late?
Answer: Students do have some flexibility in how they pace their work during the summer term. However, it’s important to understand that each A2 Virtual+ course already compresses an 18-week semester into just five weeks. Completing the same amount of work in four weeks—or starting late—makes the course significantly more demanding.
For most courses, students can sometimes adjust their pacing to catch up. However, Physical Fitness is different. This course requires students to:
- establish baseline fitness data at the beginning of the term
- complete weekly exercise logs
- track progress over time
Because physical improvement happens gradually, this course cannot realistically be condensed or completed in a shortened timeframe.
In addition, all A2 Virtual+ courses require two in-person proctored tests. While some Michigan Virtual courses may open earlier, A2 Virtual+ proctoring sessions do not begin until the start of the summer term, and students must complete both required tests before the end of the term. The proctoring schedule can be found here: Summer Term Proctoring Information
We always want students to be successful and encourage families to carefully consider the time commitment and structure of the course before enrolling. Fortunately, there are also several opportunities to earn the required fitness or health credit during the regular school year if families ultimately decide the summer option is not best for them.
Back to topHow many classes can students take in the summer?
Answer: We always recommend that students only take one class during the summer because of the challenging workload and time constraints. Students may take up to 2 classes (1.0 credit.)
If a student plans to take two classes, they must register for and pay for both classes before the add/drop deadline.
If a student is taking both halves of a course (for example, Biology A and Biology B), the student must be on track to complete the first half by the midway point in order to begin the second half.
A2 Virtual+ second-half class refund: If a student is enrolled in the second half of a course through A2 Virtual+ and is not ready to begin by the midway point, we will automatically refund the second-half class.
Michigan Virtual second-half class refund: For MV classes, we cannot issue a refund after the add/drop deadline.
Michigan Virtual (MV) & A2 Virtual+
What is the difference between an A2 Virtual+ class and a Michigan Virtual class?
Answer: Although students may earn the same credit for a course, A2 Virtual+ and Michigan Virtual are actually two different versions of the class. While both are designed to cover the same required course standards, there will be differences in curriculum, structure, pacing, and specific assignments.
Whether students take a class directly through A2 Virtual+ or take a Michigan Virtual class through A2 Virtual+'s Summer Term, ALL students are required to complete two in-person proctored assessments at an AAPS building.
Course Timeline Differences
- A2 Virtual+ classes run from June 22 – July 24, with a halfway point during the week of July 6–10
- Michigan Virtual classes begin earlier (May 15) and follow a different pacing schedule
Students should follow the pacing and deadlines within their specific course.
Curriculum and Standards
- A2 Virtual+ courses are designed and taught by AAPS teachers and are aligned closely with district expectations.
- Michigan Virtual courses are developed and taught by Michigan Virtual instructors.
- Both options are aligned to Michigan state standards and both fully meet graduation requirements for the course.
Platform Access
- A2 Virtual+ classes are completed in Schoology (AAPS platform)
- Michigan Virtual classes through A2 Virtual+ are completed in the Michigan Virtual Student Learning Portal
Proctored Assessments
While Michigan Virtual courses do not independently require proctored tests, all students earning credit through A2 Virtual+ must complete two proctored assessments, regardless of the course provider. These are typically major tests or exams and are completed in person at an AAPS building under A2V+ staff supervision. Additional details and sign-up information are shared in Schoology during the first week of the summer term.
Please note: Not all Michigan Virtual assessments are locked requiring a password. Students are responsible for knowing which assessments must be completed at a proctoring session. Students who do not take those two assessments at a proctoring session will not earn credit for the class.
Teacher Support
Michigan Virtual Teacher
- Provides instruction for the course
- Grades assignments
- Answers content-specific questions
A2 Virtual+ Mentor Teacher
- Supports the student throughout the summer
- Helps with pacing, access, and staying on track
- Assists with questions about proctoring, schedules, and program expectations
- Checks in with students through a required attendance prompt every Wednesday
This structure ensures students receive both content-specific instruction and local support throughout the course.
Cost
Families will notice a difference in cost between A2 Virtual+ and Michigan Virtual options. This reflects differences in structure, timeline, and how the courses are delivered.
What is the difference between taking a Michigan Virtual class through A2 Virtual+ and taking it directly through Michigan Virtual?
Answer: Students can take a Michigan Virtual class either through A2 Virtual+ or directly through Michigan Virtual, but there are important differences in support, proctoring requirements, and how credit is recorded.
Michigan Virtual Through A2 Virtual+
- Register through A2 Virtual+
- Pay through MyPaymentsPlus
- Receive support from both an MV instructor and an A2 Virtual+ mentor
- Must complete two in-person proctored assessments
- Letter grade is recorded as part of the district summer term process
- IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT create an account with Michigan Virtual if you plan to take the class through the A2V+ Summer Term.
- Once you register through MyPayments Plus, the A2V+ staff will create your MV account and add the class to your schedule.
- Signing up directly through MV will delay your registration; A2V+ cannot refund payments made directly through MV.
Michigan Virtual Directly Through MV
- Register and pay directly through Michigan Virtual
- Work directly with Michigan Virtual for course support
- Do not receive A2 Virtual+ mentor support
- Do not follow the A2 Virtual+ summer proctoring process
- If the course is passed, the family is responsible for contacting the student’s AAPS counselor about transfer credit
- If accepted, the course transfers as completion credit only; the letter grade can be seen on the AAPS transcript, but will not factor into a student's GPA.
Grades & Transcripts
Will summer courses earn a grade and affect my GPA?
Answer: All grades for high school classes will appear on the student’s transcript regardless of when they were taken. GPA calculations start in the fall of 9th grade, but some colleges recalculate GPAs based on all transcripted courses. A2 Virtual+ does not offer Credit/No-Credit grading.
Back to topCourse Availability & Middle School Students
Are all classes available in the summer?
Answer: No. AP classes and some other courses are not offered. Check the Course Offerings Schedule for details.
Back to topCan a middle school student take a high school class during the summer?
Answer: Yes. Incoming 7th-8th graders may take high school courses if they meet prerequisites. Any elective without prerequisites is open to them.
What science courses are available to middle school students?
| Course | Prerequisite |
|---|---|
| Biology A | Completion of 7th Grade Science |
| Earth Science A/HSS | Completion of 7th Grade Science |
| Chemistry 1 & Physics 1 | Completion of 8th Grade Science |
Can a middle school student complete Algebra 1 in the summer?
Answer: If taking only Algebra 1B, it can be completed within a single five-week A2V+ summer session. If completing both Algebra 1A & 1B, it must be done through Michigan Virtual (Algebra 1A), followed by either A2 Virtual+ or Michigan Virtual (Algebra 1B).
Back to topEnrollment & Deadlines
What is the last day to add or drop a summer term class?
Answer: A2 Virtual+ and Michigan Virtual enrollments are accepted from May 1st to June 26th.
- For A2 Virtual+ and Edgenuity classes, students have until June 26th to drop.
- For Michigan Virtual classes, students have four days from their individual enrollment date to drop. The last day to drop any Summer Term class is June 26th.
How do I drop a class after registering?
Answer: To drop a summer term class, families must complete the A2 Virtual+ Drop/Withdraw Request Form.
Once the form is submitted, please allow up to two business days for A2 Virtual+ staff to process the request.
If a refund is available, it will be returned to the original payment method. Refunds typically appear within 7–10 business days after the request has been processed.
