Middle School Students Taking High School Classes

Some high school courses are open to middle school students who have completed all required prerequisites. See the full list in the High School Course Catalog

Quick Rules

  • Prerequisites are required before moving into any high school course.
  • Math is the exception: acceleration through Algebra/Geometry is permitted when ready.
    • Students may only complete one year of math classes each semester.
      • Example: Semester 1 -> Algebra 1A & Algebra 1B
  • Students may use one or both elective slots for eligible high school courses (when prerequisites are met or when none are required).
  • Transcripts & GPA: Grades for high school courses appear on the student’s transcript. Cumulative GPA begins in the fall of 9th grade.

Examples & Guidance

  • Science: Earth Science or Biology may be taken as an elective if 6th & 7th grade science are complete. Chemistry/Physics require completion of 8th grade Science.
  • Social Studies: World History requires completion of Social Studies 6 & 7.
  • English: Complete through ELA 8A/8B before taking most HS English electives without prerequisites.
  • Electives: Many HS electives without prerequisites (e.g., some computer classes, Criminology, Archaeology) are available. See MiCourses.

Tip: Start with one HS course as a first step; consider workload and maturity.

World Languages

  • Any HS World Language can be started in middle school.
  • Students in grades 6–8 usually begin at Level 1.
  • Students with strong reading/writing in a bilingual environment may begin at Level 2.

See your school’s World Language guidance for middle vs. high school expectations.
