5th Grade Math Acceleration Entrance Criteria

Due to the nature of online learning and that students are moving directly from 4th-grade math to Math 6, the A2 Virtual+ Middle School Math for 5th Graders has specific criteria to be accepted. These criteria have been evaluated over the last eight years based on the experience of previous students in the program and in accordance with AAPS board policy.

Criteria for acceptance for the 2025-2026 School Year:

Student must meet the following requirements:

First Requirement

Minimum 4th Grade Spring NWEA Math RIT: TBD, Available June 12th (The score for last year was 242)

or

Minimum 4th Grade NWEA Winter Math RIT of 235 and Fall Math RIT of 228

The percentiles provided on the NWEA Progress Report are national results. For reference: the top 10% of AAPS 4th-grade students during the Winter administration had an NWEA Math score of 235 or better and during the Fall Administration a score of 225 or better. The Spring NWEA score is required to be considered for the program. The Spring NWEA score weighs heavily in the decision as to the fact that the majority of the grades earned in this program come from tests. Students who are not yet good test takers should wait until sixth grade to participate in the A2 Virtual+ Math Acceleration Program. There are no entrance criteria for 6th-grade students who choose to enter the Middle School Math Acceleration Program.

Second Requirement

Marks on the Report Card of 3 and 4 for Math and Learning/Social Behavior

The student report card should have marks in grade 4, especially Math, that reflect a high meeting of standards (no lower than 3 marks and there should be some 4 marks).

Social maturity and the ability to work independently are critical. The Learning/Social Behavior Section of the report card is reviewed. Students should have a mark of "3 & 4" in all areas.

For students who do not meet the requirements...

Please do not be discouraged, as your student has multiple math enrichment and acceleration opportunities in the future.

(2025-2026 School Year) Your student's classroom teacher will be able to provide your student access to a program called Dreambox, which will provide your student access to differentiated math content relevant for grades 5 through Algebra 1.

(Spring 2026, end of 5th grade) Passing the testing-out test for Math 6 at the end of 5th grade. The administration of the test will be in the spring of 2026. Middle School Testing out Information: Testing Out Information Link

(Fall 2026, start of 6th grade) Register for Online Math 6A through the A2 Virtual+ Middle School Math Acceleration Program. Upon successful completion of Math 6A, the student can immediately start Math 6B. Students in this program have the opportunity to complete more than one year of math. There is no application required to participate in this program. Students starting the fall of 6th grade in this program can complete Math 6 and Math 7 during one school
year.

(Spring 2027, end of 7th grade) Similar to option 1, but passing the testing-out test for Math 7 towards the end of completing 6th grade. The student can then enroll in AC Algebra 1 as a seventh grader
