Attendance
Attendance Policy – Mandatory Weekly Requirement
In A2Virtual+, attendance is taken every Wednesday, and it is a mandatory requirement from the State of Michigan. The state requires us to show that two-way communication (between the student and teacher) happens each week. We are audited twice a year to ensure this is being met.
How Attendance Works:
- Each Wednesday, students must complete an attendance prompt in Schoology for every class.
- The prompt is open from 12:01 AM to 11:59 PM on Wednesday.
- Students who do not complete the prompt on Wednesday will be marked “UNV” (Unverified/Absent) in PowerSchool, even if they complete it later in the week.
- Teachers will still respond to students later in the week, and once that response is made, the teacher’s reply (which completes the required two-way communication) will also be recorded in PowerSchool.
- However, the UNV mark for missing the official Wednesday attendance window will remain.
✅ What counts as attendance?
- When a student answers the prompt AND the teacher replies, this is considered two-way communication (the requirement from the state).
- In PowerSchool, this is marked as “CA” (Course Activity Completed) once the teacher has responded.
Why is it on Wednesday?
The State of Michigan defines online school weeks as starting on Wednesday and ending on Tuesday, so Wednesday is the official attendance day for online learning.
If You Miss Wednesday:
- Students who don’t complete the prompt on Wednesday will be marked “UNV” (Unverified/Absent) in PowerSchool.
- Students should still complete the prompt later, and teachers will still respond to close the two-way communication loop.
- Teachers will continue reaching out to students who miss the prompt to check in and ensure support.
Other Attendance Codes You May See in PowerSchool:
Code | Meaning |
---|---|
CA | Course Activity Completed (attendance prompt + teacher response) |
UNV | Unverified/Absent |
LA | Lesson Activity (used only during Count Weeks in October and February) |
FF | Face-to-Face (Zoom or in-person meeting) |
PH | Phone Call |
EM | |
IM | Instant Message |
Note: Completing the prompt on Wednesday and receiving a teacher response will be marked as CA, which is the preferred method for attendance.
What If My Teacher Gives Points for Attendance?
Some teachers may choose to give points for completing the prompt on time (Wednesday). If so, this will be clearly explained:
- During your course orientation
- In the grading section of the course
- On the Schoology class page
Even if no points are given, completing the attendance prompt is still required every Wednesday. Students agree to this requirement as part of the A2Virtual+ orientation.
Final Reminder:
Two-way communication is required by the state to count as attendance. The easiest way to do this is by completing your attendance prompt every Wednesday in Schoology. It helps your teacher stay connected with you and support your learning!
