Is Online Learning Right for Me?
Is Online Learning Right for Me?
Online learning is flexible — but it still takes planning, effort, and support.
A2 Virtual+ can be a great fit for many students, but success in an online class depends on more than grades alone. Students do best when they understand the expectations, manage their time, communicate when they need help, and use the support available to them.

Students who tend to do well online often...
Manage their time
They can follow a pacing guide, keep track of deadlines, and work consistently throughout the week.
Communicate early
They ask questions, check messages, and reach out when they need help or are unsure what to do next.
Work independently
They are able to begin tasks, stay focused, and make progress without constant reminders.
Use technology comfortably
They can log in, navigate online platforms, upload work, and ask for help when technology issues come up.
Online learning may be a good fit if...
- The student is motivated to take the course.
- The student can dedicate regular time each week to coursework.
- The student can follow written directions and pacing guidance.
- The student is willing to ask questions when help is needed.
- The family understands that online learning still includes deadlines and expectations.
Online learning may be more challenging if...
- The student frequently needs reminders to complete work.
- The student will be unavailable for long stretches of the term.
- The student expects online learning to be easier or less time-consuming.
- The student is uncomfortable reaching out for help when confused.
Support Available
Students are not expected to navigate online learning alone.
A2 Virtual+ provides multiple layers of support to help students stay connected, informed, and successful.
- AAPS mentor teachers for students taking Michigan Virtual courses through A2 Virtual+
- Support from both the student’s assigned building counselor and the A2V+ counselor
- Weekly attendance/check-ins that share reminders and support two-way communication
- Office hours and help sessions available when requested
- Parent/guardian communication when needed
- Course pacing guidance and progress support
- Schoology announcements, resources, and orientation materials posted in every class

Want a more detailed readiness tool?
Michigan Virtual’s Online Learner Readiness Rubric helps students, families, mentors, and educators reflect on areas such as technology skills, time management, learning style, motivation, reading/writing skills, and support services.
The rubric is not meant to determine whether a student is allowed to take an online course. Instead, it helps identify areas where students may already be strong and areas where they may need additional support.
